  • ✅ Shipping across Europe
  • ✅ ISPM 15 treatment available
  • ✅ Our own sawmill in Galicia

Firewood and hardwood heat logs are one of the biomass lines we have added alongside pellets and wood chips to the traditional work of our sawmill in Berdoias, Vimianzo. This is oak and eucalyptus firewood of Galician origin, dried either naturally or through supplementary kiln drying down to a lower moisture content, cut to the lengths most commonly asked for in the market (25 and 33 cm), and packed in a choice of formats: loose, netted, or shrink-wrapped on a pallet. The aim is a solid fuel with predictable burning behaviour, whether it is heating a single family home or supplying a rural hotel, a restaurant with a wood-fired pizza oven, or a campsite.

Buyers of this firewood range from private households looking for a reliable fuel for an open fireplace or wood stove, to hospitality and catering businesses that need consistently sized logs for pizza ovens and grills, local distributors restocking for the cold season, and wholesale buyers managing resale across several countries. Because it comes from a sawmill already working with Galician pine and eucalyptus, we can adjust log lengths, packaging formats and order volumes to what a buyer actually needs, rather than offering a single fixed product.

Firewood is also prepared with the European buyer in mind: palletised to make efficient use of load space on both road and sea freight, with delivery arranged EXW, FOB, or delivered depending on volume and destination. We regularly work with buyers across Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland, adjusting paperwork and load format to each export route.

Where this firewood comes from and how we prepare it

A significant share of the firewood we sell comes from our own forestry and sawmilling work: forest clearing, thinning operations, and lengths of oak and eucalyptus that are not suitable for sawing into board or beam but work perfectly well as fuel. This mirrors the approach we take with wood chips for industrial biomass, produced from similar residual material.

Once the wood is selected, the process moves through cutting to the requested length, splitting logs where diameter requires it, and a drying period. Depending on the order and the time of year, that drying can happen outdoors, with logs stacked to allow air to circulate between splits over several months, or through supplementary kiln drying when a buyer needs a lower and more consistent moisture level, for example for high-efficiency stoves or pizza ovens where clean combustion matters. Splitting is sized to the intended use as much as to the species: thicker splits for slow-burning open fires, narrower ones for quick-lighting stove loads, and a middle range for general household and hospitality orders that need to cover both.

Outdoor stacks are arranged to encourage airflow and shielded from direct rain, so moisture drops progressively through the spring and summer months. When an order calls for a lower and more even moisture level than natural drying can reach within the available timeframe, we bring in supplementary kiln drying before dispatch. Either way, firewood is checked before packing to remove pieces with excessive loose bark, oversized knots, or soil residue that could affect combustion or the look of the finished product.

Oak, eucalyptus and compressed logs: how the species differ

Galician oak is the benchmark choice for buyers after a long, steady burn, typical of a dense-grained hardwood; it is common in open fireplaces and stoves where a lasting ember bed is valued. Eucalyptus, abundant in Galician woodland, is a hardwood that dries relatively quickly and delivers good calorific performance, generally at a more competitive price, which makes it a common choice for larger-volume orders or blends with oak.

Alongside traditional split firewood, we also offer compressed hardwood heat logs, of the type often associated with birch in central European markets: cylindrical logs made from pressed sawdust and shavings with no added binders, very low in moisture and burning more evenly, aimed mainly at closed stoves and at buyers who want a compact format that is easy to stack, store and transport, with less bark residue and less variation between units than conventional split firewood.

  • Galician oak: long burn, strong ember bed, traditional look
  • Eucalyptus: faster drying, good calorific performance, competitive for volume orders
  • Compressed hardwood logs: very low moisture, uniform format, minimal residue

The choice between species usually comes down to end use and budget. Buyers who prioritise appearance and a long-lasting flame tend to prefer oak despite a somewhat higher cost; buyers who need volume at a tighter price point find eucalyptus does the job well without giving up decent calorific value. Many orders, particularly larger ones, blend both species in proportions agreed with the buyer, and compressed logs are often added as a complement for anyone wanting quick, clean-burning ignition logs for closed stoves.

Moisture control, cutting and quality

Moisture content is the single biggest factor in how firewood performs: poorly dried logs burn worse, leave more residue in a chimney or stove flue, and give less usable heat per load. That is why we keep air-dried firewood, at an indicative moisture level around 20-25%, clearly separate from firewood that has had additional kiln drying, which can be brought down consistently below 20%. Buyers can request either level depending on use: naturally dried firewood for a domestic fireplace, or drier firewood for high-efficiency stoves and professional uses where clean combustion matters more.

Cutting stays consistent within each order, at the 25 cm and 33 cm lengths most common across the Spanish and central European markets, with a split diameter chosen so logs light easily without being so thin that they burn through too quickly. Before dispatch, firewood is checked to make sure there is no excessive loose bark, soil or debris that could affect combustion or lead to complaints from the end buyer.

Volume and weight for each order are agreed before preparation, whether by apparent cubic metre for bulk or bulk-bag sales, or by number of nets or bundles for smaller orders. For buyers working to a specific moisture range under local regulation or a customer requirement, we can adjust drying time or combine natural and kiln drying to get closer to the requested level, noting the indicative range on the order documentation.

Who buys this firewood: households, hospitality and distribution

Domestic use in an open fireplace or wood stove remains the most common destination, whether in netted bags for individual households or loose and in bulk bags for buyers consuming larger volumes through the cold season. In hospitality and catering, particularly businesses running a wood-fired pizza oven or grill, buyers value a consistent cut and a low, stable moisture level, because both affect oven temperature and the taste of the food being cooked.

We also work with campsites and rural accommodation that resell netted firewood to guests, with local distributors restocking DIY stores and hardware shops through autumn and winter, and with wholesale buyers managing resale across several European countries. For buyers after a more automated biomass fuel rather than split logs, we usually point them toward our wood pellets for biomass heating range, built for boilers and auto-feed stoves.

For events and outdoor catering, where braziers or grills run for several hours at a stretch, a netted or bundled format that event staff can carry and dose easily is usually preferred over a bulk order suited to prolonged home storage. We adjust order size and packaging format to that kind of one-off use just as readily as to a recurring seasonal order for a distributor, and can split a single delivery across formats when a buyer needs, for example, netted bags for retail alongside a bulk-bag top-up for their own stock.

Forest sourcing and sustainability

Firewood largely comes from Galician woodland close to the sawmill, within the same supply chain we use for the rest of our forestry and biomass activity: clearing work, thinning, and the use of felling residue that would otherwise have little value. This approach sits close to the sustainable forest management principles promoted by bodies such as FAO Forestry, in a region where forestry has been part of the local economy for generations.

We do not present this firewood as carrying formal forest certification, but we do keep the origin traceable and local, and aim for a full-use approach to each tree: board and beam timber for sawing, and firewood, chips or mulch for material that has no structural use, in line with the rest of our biomass range, including the decorative mulch and bark we produce from the same workflow. That full-use approach is also, in practical terms, how a small sawmill keeps forestry and clearing work worthwhile: turning material that would otherwise be left in the forest or burned on site into a usable fuel product reduces waste on both ends of the supply chain.

Exporting and shipping firewood across Europe

Firewood is prepared palletised, netted or shrink-wrapped, with the aim of making good use of load space on both truck and sea container transport, which matters particularly for larger-volume orders headed to France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom or Ireland. Depending on destination and volume, delivery can be agreed EXW, FOB, or delivered, and we adapt accompanying paperwork to the destination country.

For shipments outside the European Union, such as to the United Kingdom, it is worth knowing that firewood is subject to its own plant health requirements, distinct from those that apply to wood packaging under ISPM 15 / IPPC rules; it is best to confirm the certificate or inspection each customs authority requires before finalising an order. Within the EU, movement is more straightforward, though it is still worth planning ahead during peak season, when firewood demand rises sharply across several European markets at once.

Where a wood pallet is also used as the load base, we aim for that pallet to be manufactured or treated in line with EPAL/EUR specifications and, where the destination requires it, with ISPM 15 / IPPC heat treatment, so the pallet itself does not create a separate customs issue apart from its contents. Accompanying paperwork, delivery notes and invoices are prepared in Spanish and English on request, and we coordinate collection dates with regular hauliers to fit each shipment into the loading window available on a given route.

Why buy firewood from Maderas Caamaño

We are a family-run sawmill in Berdoias, Vimianzo, with direct contact between the buyer and the people handling the wood, without extra layers between Galician forest and finished order. That makes it possible to adjust log lengths, moisture levels and packaging formats to specific orders, which is not always straightforward with suppliers who only offer one fixed firewood format.

As part of a wider biomass range that includes pellets, wood chips and mulch, we can combine orders and adjust export logistics when the same buyer needs several product lines in a single shipment. Unlike wood pellets, which buyers often benchmark against schemes such as the ENplus wood pellet quality certification scheme, firewood is generally judged on species, cut and moisture content rather than a pellet-specific standard, and we are happy to talk through those factors against your intended use.

We also try to be upfront about what we can and cannot promise: moisture content and calorific performance vary naturally with species, season and how firewood is stored after delivery, so we describe those figures as typical ranges rather than fixed guarantees, and are glad to discuss what to expect for a specific order before it ships. If you need hardwood firewood for your own household, for a hospitality business, or for wholesale distribution in your country, send us the volume and approximate destination and we will put together a proposal matched to your order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between air-dried and kiln-dried firewood?

Air-dried firewood is stacked outdoors for several months and typically settles around 20-25% moisture, while kiln drying brings that down more consistently below 20%. Kiln-dried firewood is generally preferable for high-efficiency stoves or ovens where clean, predictable combustion matters.

What log lengths do you cut?

We mainly work to the standard 25 cm and 33 cm lengths, which are the most common across the Spanish market and much of Europe. Other lengths can be prepared on request depending on order volume.

Can I buy firewood loose, or only netted?

We offer both, along with shrink-wrapped bundles and bulk bags for larger orders. The right format depends on whether the order is for a household, resale through a shop, or wholesale distribution.

Do you export firewood outside Spain?

Yes, we prepare palletised orders for export to a range of European countries, with delivery arranged EXW, FOB, or delivered depending on volume. For destinations outside the EU it is best to confirm the exact plant health requirements of the relevant customs authority beforehand.

What are compressed hardwood heat logs?

They are cylindrical logs made from pressed hardwood sawdust and shavings with no added binders, with very low moisture content and a more even burn than traditional split firewood. They are popular for closed stoves and for buyers wanting a compact, easy-to-store format.

How long does a firewood order take to prepare?

As a guide, typically one to three weeks depending on the volume requested and the time of year, since demand rises during the cold season. For larger export orders it is worth checking lead time in advance.

What's your minimum order for firewood & hardwood heat logs for fireplaces, stoves and wood-fired ovens?

There's no fixed minimum published online for firewood — smaller netted or bundled orders are available alongside full-truckload bulk deliveries for distributors and larger seasonal buyers. Tell us your target format and volume for a quote.
