At Maderas Caamaño we make our wood stakes directly at our sawmill in Berdoias (Vimianzo, A Coruña), starting from small-diameter roundwood sourced from thinning operations in Galician forests. The result is a debarked stake with a machine-cut chisel point, ready to drive straight into the ground with no further preparation needed. Because we control the whole process ourselves — from the roundwood intake to bundling and palletising for transport — we can adjust diameters, lengths and order volumes to what each customer actually needs, rather than restricting buyers to a fixed catalogue of sizes. We supply both small orders for family-run holdings and larger volumes for cooperatives, nurseries and distributors.
This product is bought mainly by vineyards and wineries for trellising and vine training, fruit growers and nurseries staking young trees, agricultural and livestock fencing contractors, and landscaping and gardening businesses that need sturdy stakes for plot boundaries, temporary marking or plant support. We also receive regular orders from agricultural cooperatives and rural supply merchants who resell by the unit or by the bundle to individual farmers.
As a family-run sawmill with its own ongoing trade in Galician pine and eucalyptus timber, and with integrated forestry services (felling, extraction and clearing), we have direct access to locally sourced raw material, which lets us keep manufacturing lead times predictable and pricing competitive against traders who buy finished stock from third parties. We serve orders within Spain and export to other European markets — Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland — with packaging suited to long-distance transport and palletising built for full-truckload or groupage shipments, and we handle the paperwork each destination requires.

From roundwood to stake: made in-house at our own sawmill
The process starts with selecting small-diameter roundwood, most of it coming from thinning operations we carry out as part of our own forestry services (felling, extraction and clearing) in forests around the mill. This use of thinning material, managed in line with the criteria set by the Galician regional forestry authority, gives commercial value to wood that would otherwise have little market, while also encouraging better growth in the remaining trees on the plot.
Once at the sawmill, the roundwood is debarked and cut to the requested length, then passed through a pointing machine that shapes a single chisel-cut point, leaving a stake ready to be driven straight into the ground without any extra tools. The stakes are then grouped and tied into manageable bundles for palletising and transport. Because the entire process — from raw material intake through to the finished bundle — stays within our own facility, we can adapt diameters and lengths to specific orders rather than working from a fixed catalogue or relying on third-party manufacturers, and we can scale production to seasonal peaks such as vineyard preparation ahead of planting.
Before final bundling, each batch is visually checked to set aside pieces with obvious defects that could weaken the stake when it is driven in. Bundle size is set according to the product's diameter, so weight and volume stay manageable both at our own yard and when unloading at destination, whether by hand or with mechanical equipment.
Species and how the wood performs
Most of our stakes are made from Galician pine (Pinus pinaster and Pinus radiata), the dominant species in local forests and the same timber we use in our Galician sawn pine timber. It is a straight-grained, lightweight wood that is easy to drive into the ground and performs well mechanically for light support structures; like any untreated softwood, though, its service life in prolonged contact with damp soil is limited unless it receives some form of protection.
For applications that call for greater natural resistance to soil moisture — perimeter fencing, corner posts, or any use involving prolonged ground contact — we can also make the same product in eucalyptus, a denser timber with better natural behaviour in damp conditions than untreated pine. In both cases the wood is supplied in its natural state, undyed; if your project needs additional protection against moisture or insects, we can discuss surface treatment or impregnation options on request, since we do not apply a certified preservative treatment to this product as standard.
In terms of handling, pine is lighter and easier to drive by hand or mallet into soft, cultivated ground, while eucalyptus, being denser, usually needs more force or a mechanical post driver, particularly in compacted soil. Both species show a pale cut surface that darkens naturally with weathering over time, which has no bearing on the stake's structural function.
Dimensions and quality standards
We typically work with lengths from around 1 to 2.5 metres and diameters of roughly 3 to 8 cm, measured at the widest point of the round, though the final cut is always matched to the customer's specification: if your project needs a specific size — say, 1.2 m stakes for a low trellis or 2 m stakes for perimeter fencing — we cut to that size rather than limiting you to fixed catalogue references.
Quality control during manufacturing focuses on three things: diameter consistency within a bundle, so stakes drive in with even resistance along a line; a clean point cut, angled enough to penetrate compact or stony ground without excessive force; and the absence of through-splits or loose knots near the point that could cause breakage while driving. Stakes are supplied debarked and at the natural moisture content of freshly processed timber; if you need additional drying ahead of a later surface treatment, let us know when placing your order so we can plan the timeline.
We do not require a fixed minimum order to consider a request, though the best cost per unit usually comes with full-bundle or full-pallet quantities. If your operation needs a mix of diameters — for example thinner stakes for young plant support and heavier ones for row-end anchoring — we can prepare a single shipment combining those sizes, provided you tell us the proportion of each you need.
Applications by industry
The most common use for our stakes is trellising in viticulture: securing wire systems and training vines along planting rows, where diameter and length are chosen according to the training system and plant spacing. In fruit growing and nursery work, smaller-diameter stakes are used to support young trees during their first years of growth, until the trunk gains its own strength.
Beyond strictly agricultural use, fencing orders are common too — whether agricultural, livestock or perimeter fencing — and for these we often recommend considering eucalyptus stakes for their greater natural resistance in ground contact compared with untreated pine. We also supply landscaping and gardening businesses for bed edging, securing ornamental plantings and temporary plot marking, as well as agricultural operations that simply use stakes to mark and delimit cultivation or irrigation zones.
We also get occasional enquiries from forestry contractors and civil works crews for temporary boundary marking, protecting young forest replanting from wildlife or machinery, and marking out work areas on site — uses outside strictly agricultural work that still rely on the same stake qualities: easy to drive, low cost, and available in whatever diameter the job calls for.

Forest sourcing and sustainability
The timber used in our stakes comes from Galician forests near the sawmill, largely from the thinning work we carry out through our own forestry services. This kind of harvesting — removing smaller trees to encourage the growth of the remaining stand — is a standard silvicultural practice that also puts small-diameter wood to commercial use rather than letting it go to waste or into low-value biomass.
As a family-run sawmill, we work in line with the responsible forest management principles promoted by organisations such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), prioritising traceability and reasonable use of Galician woodland. That said, we do not currently offer stakes under a formal chain-of-custody forest certification; if your project or end client requires that specific certification, please raise it before confirming your order so we can talk through the options available.
Using small-diameter roundwood for stakes also fits our broader approach to using the whole tree: the same forestry work that yields this raw material also feeds our sawn timber production and our biomass by-products, so the tree as a whole — from the main stem through to branches and cutting residues — is put to commercial use rather than left as waste in the forest.
Export and logistics across Europe
We ship wood stakes within Spain and to other European countries, including Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Bundles are palletised to make the best use of truck space, whether as a full truckload or as groupage combined with other products from our range, such as our kiln-dried (KD) timber, if your order also includes sawn timber for other uses.
We work on the standard delivery terms used in the timber trade — EXW, FOB or delivered, depending on what suits each customer — and prepare the transport and customs documentation needed for intra-EU shipments and for exports to non-EU countries. For destinations outside the European Union, specific phytosanitary certification may be required depending on the importing country's rules; we confirm this during order preparation to avoid delays at customs. Manufacturing and shipping lead times are estimated case by case according to volume, species and season, and we always confirm them before an order is finalised rather than quoting a generic fixed turnaround.
For international orders we prepare commercial documentation in Spanish and English where the customer needs it, and coordinate loading points and destination access requirements with the carrier, which matters particularly when a stake order is combined with pallets or other larger palletised cargo. For shipments to the United Kingdom or other markets outside the EU, we factor in the additional customs procedures in advance so they don't put the planned delivery date at risk.
Why choose Maderas Caamaño for your wood stakes
We are a family-run sawmill with an ongoing trade in buying, selling and processing Galician pine and eucalyptus timber, and we run our own forestry services that give us direct access to raw material. That integration — from forest to bundle — lets us offer tighter lead times and genuine flexibility on dimensions, something a trader buying finished stock from third parties cannot always match.
If you need a specific volume, a mix of diameters, or a delivery schedule matched to your planting or harvest calendar, get in touch directly: we prepare tailored quotes and can combine a stake order with other products from our range — sawn timber, kiln-dried timber or export pallets — to optimise a single shipment, which is especially useful for orders bound for other European countries.
We handle enquiries directly, without sales intermediaries, which makes it easier to sort out technical questions on diameter, species or lead times with the people actually making the product. If it helps, we can send photos of the available batch or of a sample bundle before you confirm a larger order, so you can check the point finish and calibre before committing. We're also happy to talk through practical questions that don't fit neatly into a spec sheet — how a particular soil type affects driving depth, whether a shorter or longer stake suits your row spacing better, or how to sequence a mixed order of stakes and sawn timber into one delivery — because those details often matter more to the outcome than the numbers on a data sheet alone.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes do your wood stakes come in?
We typically work with lengths from around 1 to 2.5 metres and diameters of roughly 3 to 8 cm, but the final cut is matched to the customer's specification. Tell us the size you need and we will cut to that length and diameter.
Are the stakes treated, or is this natural wood?
They are supplied as natural, debarked, undyed timber without a certified preservative treatment as standard. If your project needs extra protection against moisture or insects, we can discuss surface treatment options on request when you place your order.
What wood species do you use?
Mainly Galician pine, the dominant species in local forests. We can also make stakes in eucalyptus, which offers greater natural resistance in ground contact, if your application calls for it.
Do you ship wood stakes outside Spain?
Yes, we export to other European countries including Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland, with palletised bundles and the transport and customs documentation appropriate to the destination.
What is the manufacturing and delivery lead time?
It depends on volume, species and the season the order falls in; we confirm it case by case when preparing your quote rather than quoting a generic fixed lead time.
Can I order a small volume, or only large quantities?
We handle both small orders for family-run holdings and larger volumes for cooperatives, nurseries and distributors; get in touch with the quantity and sizes you need for a quote.
What's your minimum order for wood stakes for viticulture, agriculture and fencing?
We don't publish a fixed minimum order for wood stakes — smaller bundled quantities are generally available alongside full-truckload volumes for agricultural and forestry buyers. Contact us with the diameter, length and volume you need.
